RE: [computer-go] Why do computer-Go apps not label 'i' as the 9throw?

Title: Message
It's the notation adopted by the first western book on go, published about 120 years ago.  Computer go just adopted the standard
notation already used in books, throughout the western go community.  There is nothing Asian or computer about it :)

Subject: [computer-go] Why do computer-Go apps not label 'i' as the 9th row?

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but why is the convention to avoid labeling the 9th row in a board display ‘I’.  Is this to avoid confusion with ‘L’?  Is there a problem with that character on Asian OSs?  It seems a little arbitrary to me and figured I would ask.

Thanks,

-Chris Smith
