Can we cut the positions with don't care out of the pattern? That is to create patterns with holes in it. To imeplement this approach one need to create a new mathematical representation of patterns. At present a single number is used to represent a pattern. If we treat the number as a number, it has no geometric information in it. We need a identity that has a geometric content, an abstraction of the geometric properties of the pattern.
