I disagree. An hour was deemed convenient and about what a human
wanted to wait for a computer. And that is still true today.
None of those programs were strong enough to consider them "ample."
I don't want to see computer Go programs behaving like MS operating
systems, getting slower in proportion as computers get faster, so that
we gain nothing from all the extra speed that Intel offers us.
Or in SlugGo's case IBM as it runs on G4 and G5 boxes ... but I digress.
I think it is worth noting that for the past several years the best Go
programs have played near the 8 kyu level. SlugGo is playing
even with at least one of those programs when giving it a 4 stone
handicap (although I would not say that that means it is a 4 kyu).
In some ways SlugGo is telling us how much more computing power
is needed to play significantly stronger.
Cheers,
David
