this is a great idea.  picking an existing protocol
with existing libraries seems like a good idea, as
does limiting (and therefore choosing) the number of
rulesets to be put into place.

one other option (in the case that people wanted to
get this up and running more quickly) would be to
pick a single ruleset and a very primitive protocol
for moves and starting options, and just crank this
bad boy out.  it really doesn't seem like it'd be
that much work.

seriously, you could attach your code one evening,
come back a week later and have 50 (or 500) games
of data to look at.

great idea.

anyone have a publicly attached unix-based machine
to spare for running the matches?  this would be
*reeeealy* low bandwidth if everyone promised to
limit the number of simultaneously connected copies.
