And it's taken all of those years for programs to come pretty much
on par with the very best human players.   

Considering the substantial extra complexity of Go, it's hard for me
to imagine that another 50 years is enough to dominate human players
in Go.

Someone mentioned software advances,  but I remind you that computer
chess software improvement has been relatively modest in 50 years.
The basic formula for writing a chess program hasn't changed much,
it's just engineered better.
