Sometimes it won't, sometimes you will lose a lot. Consider what
happens if there's a seki on the board, or if you (X) happen to play
the liberties in the wrong order in this position:

|XXXX..
|OOOXXX
|O.OOOX
|XXX.OX
+------

It's still alternating play, so O won't sit passive if a chance to
live unexpectedly appears.

And of course, in the case of a bent four in the corner you really
have to know what you're doing.
