I think, this is not the reason. I've seen Boards with A B C D E F G H I K L M N O P Q R S T. That means, it is an I or is an J. Maybe, it is because I and J could easily be confused?
' I ' is only in english a pronoun and has no meaning in other languages. In all other Boardgames, which have big boards (bigger than 9x9) it is a standard to take only one of the two letters ' I ' or ' J ', too. This is therefore not only a usual practice in Go.

Im happy, if anyone knows the exact reason.
