It sounds like you are playing 19x19.  Couldn't you save a huge amount
of time by using a smaller board?  Like 13x13?   At least to get some
preliminary results and to get the code to do what you want in a well
organized and extensible way.  13x13 games should be around 4x faster
since you get the reduced board area and the reduced game length.
