hi, i've been a member of this list for some time, keeping track of
computer-go progress. right now i'm at the US Go Congress in Tacoma,
where things are starting to move at a brisk pace, as about 500 people
are registered.

i heard that at the 2004 European Congress in Tuchola, some folks set
up a webcam and were able to output moves from a game played in Real
Life{tm}.

this technology interests me quite a bit, especially this week, so i'm
wondering if anyone on the list saw the previous work and can help me
find it, or its authors.
Yes, a webcam was used at Tuchola last year. Viewers could watch the stones being played in real time; and try to identify the players by the tops of their heads. Svetlana Shikshina was the easiest.

On the third day, the organisers realised that the webcam would be more interesting if viewers knew who the players were. They wrote the players' names on a card, and left this face up near the clock. Viewers could see the card, and just about make out that it had what was probably writing on it.

Sometime in the second week, the organisers realised that cards were not good enough, and listed the names of the players on the web site, next to the link to the web cam.

This spring, in Maidenhead, UK, a webcam was used for board one of the European Pair-Go tournament. Illegible cards were used again there.

In this year's EGC in Prague, there was no webcam. But the games from board 1 of the main tournament were relayed live on KGS by the recorder. Some other major events are relayed live on IGS.
