Re: [computer-go] how to use GTP in place of GMP

I think cheating is a lot easier in manually operated games where the
operator has his hands all over the keyboard and IS THE interface to
the board.

But cheating will always be possible no matter what.

This issues seem to fall into two broad categories:

   1. Ways that a stronger player (presumably a human) can do things to affect
the move choice of the computer.

   2. Ways you can sobotage the opponent.

Under the pressure of tournament conditions people often get downright
paranoid. If we see a little irregularity it must be a cheat. I hope
computer go is a little gentler than computer chess in this regard,
but this kind of talk already makes me a little sad, we are already
figuring out how to combat cheating.

I'm sad to say the paranoia is not without basis. In computer chess
there has indeed been substantial cheating. There has also been much
presumed cheating that didn't really exist (paranoia.) So I'm sad
that we have to even talk about it, but probably we do (or will) at
some point.

At the moment I don't think it is a major problem, but I'm not sure
about all possible participants (see e.g.,
   http://www.msoworld.com/mindzine/news/scandals/scandal0400.html).

The current Go programs are still weak and the stakes are not very high
(no million dollar prices at the moment). However, as computers will get
stronger in the future I think the atmosphere between (some)
participants may become less friendly. In this context it is interesting
to consider that the World Computer Chess Championship is still played
   manually over the board.

Of course there are technical solutions to overcome most problems, but I
suspect that they will significantly increase the burden on the
organizers. (The tournament director may have to be an expert in Go
rules, network communication protocols, and security issues!)
