Ah, so you mean computer go tournaments aren't about programs winning, but
authors winning?
I'm suprised that you didn't know this!
Of course it is. Ask any of the commercial entrants.
But even with the amateurs it's real simple, they enter a tournament,
they hope that their program will win. Yes, they do it for the fun
too, but I guarantee you that they wouldn't complain if they won.
Put in several GNU-bot's and see if the participation drops. I know
of at least 1 participant that would drop.
And also that any genius that can handle developing several different
programs at once, even if he proves thay are completely different where it
matters, won't be allowed to enter more than one of these programs in a
single tournament?
Let's ask Nick. Can I enter 3 programs Nick?
I can understand such a point of view, but I am sorry that I can't agree
with it.
I'm ok with that. I have noticed that in general, program AUTHORS are
taking one point of view, observers are taking another point of view
and there is only a little crossover (usually when the author is
starting from the GNU code base.)
Now, the practical tournament at hand is Nick's, but I felt it was here a
quest for a general and principial way to handle these issues. Probably
there isn't one, so it's up to each tournament organizer.
I'm coming to that conclusion. Program authors will "vote" with their
participation on how they feel.
I feel I learned a lot from these discussions, about other points of view
than my own. Thanks everyone who contributed! (well, it might not be over
yet, so thanks in advance for to all who will keep contributing :-)
best regards,
Vlad
