Re: [computer-go] future KGS Computer Go Tournaments - two sections?

A breath of fresh air!

And I'm trying to be intellecually honest too. When I enter botnoid
into a tournament I am hoping for it to do well. I actually want to
see it win and I get a little excited when it wins and a little
disppointed when it loses. I never lose any sleep over this, but I
still want it to win or place high.

It would be very easy for me to claim purer motives, but I want to be
honest here. I could say it's solely an intellectual excercise to
advance the state of the art (this part is true, I want to advance the
art) and that it doesn't matter to me if I win or lose (that part is a
lie.) My only motive is an intellectual curiousity about what would
happen if botnoid enters. Win or lose I don't care, I just want "to
learn something."

The commercial guys are the most honest of all. They want to win
because it helps their sales and they don't apologize for that. The
fact that their programs are extremely strong (for go programs) means
that must have something going on intellectually despite their impure
motives.

I don't want to win unfairly. It's ugly to win when your opponent plays
uglier than you. It tarnishes the results to a degree. I guess a lot
of players have gotten wins off of botnoid that way :-)

I was thinking just about that, after sending my latest reply. It is
understandable, and if my own little program was in a state where it could
compete even with DumbBot, maybe I would have been thinking differently.

   best regards,
