Could it be that this 'block' is just an urban legend, a
self-reinforcing belief that prevents some part of the world from
participating, and thus the word spreds that they are blocked, and even
fewer will ever try...

Other formats have their advantages, certainly, but so do mailing lists.
For example, all the posts on this list arrive automagically into a
folder in my mail reader, and remind me of their existence in the right
place of the hierarchy of other mailing lists... This has taken some
time to set up, but now it works the way I want it to. Changing the
system would cause at least a minor inconvinience of reconfiguring it
all to suit my needs, possibly even requiring me to change my habits,
which would be unpleasant :-)  

The above is - of course - only a personal opinion of someone who mostly
lurks on this list.
